About

Suburban Hockey is a registered charity which was set up by some members of Surbiton Hockey Club.  The company has the specific aim of delivering a programme of hockey coaching to local schools, many of whom have little or no organise sport.

Suburban Hockey offers free coaching sessions in schools clubs or in curriculum time, for children between the ages of 8 and 13 years old.  All the sessions are delivered by qualifed and experienced coaches and at the end of each term the children are invited to take part in a tournament at a local hockey club.    The hockey sessions are fun for the children, aiming to build their fitness, attract them to the sport and provide them with the basic skills for future participation.

Our Mission

Suburban Hockey aims to bridge the social gap by taking hockey to children in a wider community and by offering opportunities for more children to enjoy the sport at club level in the  future.  Will Fulker, Director of Coaching at Suburban Hockey, comments, ” We are providing an experience that can enrich a child’s life, giving them not only a skill in a sport, but a boost for their confidence too.  This is the year that we hope our Olympic hockey players will win Gold for GB.  Perhaps the local schools contain some of our future Olympic stars too.  We would like to find them!”

Suburban Hockey is also offering a number of annual bursaries for talented children who would otherwise be unable to afford to join a hockey club.  These are our “Shining Star” Awards and in the past six months we have had four children who have benefitted from the Award.

Our Funding

The programme is funded by sponsorship, donations and in some cases the schools themselves. Suburban Hockey is a registered charity, working in association with Surbiton Hockey Club (SHC) in the Kingston and Elmbridge areas and with Cheam Hockey Club in the Sutton and Cheam area.  We are happy to work with other hockey clubs in their areas too.

The Suburban Hockey programme has been developed from SHC’s experience of working with children in schools.  During the past three years SHC has been extending its offer to children in the local community and has been working with schools and School Sports Partnerships to deliver a suitable programme of hockey.  A number of coaches have been running after school clubs at primary and secondary schools across Kingston and Elmbridge, using the “Quicksticks” syllabus, England Hockey’s brand new game designed specifically for ages 7-12 in primary schools.

Suburban Hockey is also works with Living Hockey and has the support of Active Surrey and England Hockey.
